SERVICESGlaucoma is a potentially blinding disease, "the Silent Thief of Sight", where the optic nerve becomes weak silently and gradually. This causes the patient to eventually lose sight. This loss is permanent and cannot be recovered. Disha identifield the importance of surveillance in this vital area in eye care. Every single patient who comes to Disha has an intra- ocular pressure (IOP) check with a non- contact air puff tonometer. Raised IOP is the main controllable factor in this disease. Each patient undergoes a basic examination and if there is any suspicion, the patient immediately undergoes gonioscopy (anterior chamber angle examination), IOP check with Applanation Tonometry (most accurate) and checking for any early weakness of the optic nerve by Visual Field analysis and other specialised tests. All glaucoma patients and their family members are thoroughly counselled about this disease and its treatment and are also provided with informative leaflets to go through later. The different modalities of treatment done in this Department are- 1) YAG laser peripheral iridotomies 2) Trabeculectomy with/ without anti- metabolites like 5FU or MMC 3) Trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy for Congenital Galucoma 4) Combined operations for Cataract and Glaucoma 5) Non- Penetrating laser glaucoma surgery 6) Cylodiode laser therapy and Ahmed glaucoma valves for intractable cases. |
